SUMMARY:Queerhill Histories
DESCRIPTION:What does Queer mean in this time and place?\nHow can Queer history be defined and what even is history itself? \nWe will share a common space where being Queer in any way is welcome to explore these topics. Together\, we offer Queerhill Histories as a space to be discovered\, to emerge\, to take shape\, and to be articulated into something new. \nEach meeting has a theme or topic and the event series will be facilitated by the organisers so you can just show up — there’s no need to prepare! \nMeetings will be held once a month from November 2023 to March 2024. \nThe event series is intended for anyone who — in one way or another — feels the desire and need to share a space dedicated to Queer people. We are inspired by the following definition of Queer\, as proposed by the Institute of Queer Ecology (2019) as “an expanded understanding of Queer Community that includes nonhuman kin and prioritizes anyone subjugated\, regardless of race\, class\, nationality\, ability\, income level\, sexuality\, gender or species.” \nUnder 15s must be accompanied by an adult. There is no upper age limit. \nWe adhere to the principles of safer spaces. You can find out more here. \nThe concept and the event series are part of Rainbow History Month\, a project organised by the Friends of Rainbow History in November 2023. \nQueerhill Histories / Kvääriä Okuhistoriaa is created in cooperation with ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS\, Nadja Leham and Helmi Räisänen and supported by the Friends of Rainbow History. \nAt our first meeting\, ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS performance collective will share some of their Queer history research interests\, including the 2023 project reexamining the paintings and life of Reidar Särestöniemi from a Queer perspective. We will also talk about our plans for the upcoming meetings and what we hope to discover and share together. \nWe ask:\nHow can we activate an interest in the specific Queer history of Outokumpu?\nAre there any notable figures or written histories?\nAre there other hidden ways to trace Queerness in the area?\nHow do we create layers of Queer history ourselves through our meetings? \nEvent information \nWhen?\nThe first meeting is on Thursday\, 30th of November 17:30-19:30. \nFurther meetings will take place once a month.\nMore details will be announced soon. \nWhere?\nOutokumpu Library\, Koulukatu 7\, in ‘The Gallery’ room. We will meet you at the main entrance. \nLanguage\nThe working languages for the project are Finnish and English. Some material will be presented in English or Finnish only. We will do our best to translate or assist with understanding where needed and to accommodate other languages. \nFurther questions\ninfo@oncewewereislands.com \nAccessibility information \nThere is a wheelchair ramp outside at the entrance. There is a three centimetre threshold at the entrance. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet. We do not have a sign language interpreter at the event. The meeting is held in a space called ‘The Gallery’\, on the left-hand side of the main entrance. In the room there are windows facing the library corridor\, from which one can see into the space where we are meeting. \nYou can participate in the meeting in a way that is suitable for you. You can either just listen\, or participate in the conversation. You can leave and come back to the space in whichever way is good for you. It is OK to sit on the floor or change position. There will be snacks and soft drinks available at the meeting. The food will be vegan and nut free. \nIf you have more specific accessibility needs you would like us to know about or in case you have additional questions\, you are welcome to write to us at: info@oncewewereislands.com

SUMMARY:Queer History Month 2023 in November
DESCRIPTION:We challenge you and your organization to make the silent history a cultural heritage shared by all! \nFriends of Queer History invites memory organizations\, schools\, art organizations and associations to celebrate queer history month every year in November. The goal of Queer History Month is to examine Finnish history and culture from the LGBTQIA+ perspectives and record them as part of our common cultural heritage. \nYou can register your event directly on our website: Add your event. \nFor ideas and inspiration for different ways to get involved\, browse the event archives of previous years (mostly in Finnish). \nQueer History Month is a series of events open to all\, and we will compile a calendar of events on our website. \n  \nHere are some ways to participate as an organizer:\n  \n1) By organizing an event or an exhibition:\nThe programme is realized with the own funding of the participating organizations and contributors. The organizing body is responsible for its own marketing. The team coordinating Queer History Month moderates the event calendar on our website and adds the events announced there. \n2) By making queer history visible in everyday life:\nLibraries can participate\, for example\, by organizing related book recommendations and other material exhibitions. Schools can participate by organizing theme days related to the topic\, by inviting experts in the history of gender and sexual minorities to speak\, or through various workshops or group work. \n3) By writing about queer history:\nOn our website\, we publish texts on queer history from a variety of perspectives. Read more on our website and propose a text by contacting us: https://sateenkaarihistoria.fi/en/instructions-for-authors/ \n4) By communicating about queer history:\nYou can also participate by sharing material\, images\, texts or reflections related to queer history on social media with the hashtags #Sateenkaarihistoria #Queerhistoria #QueerHistory. You can link or tag our profile either on Facebook or Instagram (@sateenkaarihistoria) – we highlight tagged posts or posts with above hashtags on our own channels. \n  \nMany parties fly rainbow flags during Pride month in June. If you are organizing activities during Queer History Month\, November can also be a good time for flagging. In addition\, flagging communicates that the organization has activities related to the topic. \n  \nMore information:\nMandi Markkanen\nProducer\nFriends of Queer History\nmandi.markkanen@sateenkaarihistoria.fi

SUMMARY:Finding Tom
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to a journey from darkness to light\, to be the main character in a story about homosexual men in Helsinki. Come and find one of “Tom’s men” from yourself: unashamed\, proud\, sexy and masculine\, and experience a slice of Finnish homosexual history through a touching story. \nFinding Tom is an immersive\, participatory artwork that combines live action role playing\, theatre and other art forms. It tells the story of homosexual men who lived in Helsinki from the 40’s to the 70’s and of the influence Tom of Finland’s art had on them. \nThe experience lasts five hours (5h) and includes workshops\, the play time and a debrief. You must be present for the whole duration. Pack your own lunch. \nAlthough all the characters in the story are homosexual men\, we welcome all bodies\, genders and sexualities to this journey. This event is body positive and free from discrimination. \nMore information: https://findingtom.wordpress.com/\nVenue: https://www.museumofimpossibleforms.org/ \nACCESSIBILITY \nThe event is not accessible by a wheelchair. You need to be able to stand\, walk\, talk\, read some text and touch other people’s hands and arms. Some parts of the event have very dim lighting. SUMMARY:Queer History Wikipedia Workshop 2022
DESCRIPTION:Queer History Month in Finland is celebrated every year in November. Come and learn more about Finnish queer history and add missing queer history on Wikipedia! \nEvent description\nWhat and why?\nQueer history is everyone’s common history\, but there is a lot of silence around it. It is not always easy to find reliable\, open information about Finnish queer history\, which is a common problem with other marginalized historiography as well. Also Wikipedia has huge gaps related to queer history\, such as important missing pages and sections of pages\, or individual mentions. These shortcomings push queer history further into silence and distort the understanding of common history. \nJoin us in complementing Wikipedia with the contents of queer history and making queer history available to everyone! \nWhere and when?\nThe Queer History Wikipedia Workshop will be organized onThursday 24 November 2022 from 4 to 7 pm. \nIt is a hybrid event\, meaning it is organized simultaneously in HAM Tennis Palace\, Helsinki (Eteläinen Rautatiekatu 8\, 00100 Helsinki)\, as well as online on Zoom. You can indicate your preferred way of participating in the registration form. \nFor whom?\nAnyone interested in the topic can participate in the workshop! You don’t have to be an expert on queer history or Wikipedia editing\, you can just come as you are. Whether you are a young queer person or an experienced researcher of queer history\, a queer activist or an ally\, in the Wikipedia workshop you can get to the bottom of things together\, and support is available. \nThe workshop is a particularly good opportunity to get to know Finnish queer history at a low level and\, of course\, learn how to edit Wikipedia in a nice group. You can sign up with your friend. \nHow?\n\nSign up for the event\, so that we can prepare snacks for everyone participating and prepare for the number of participants on site and remotely. The event is free of charge.\nPlease create a Wikipedia account in advance. If possible\, bring your own laptop with you if you are attending on-site.\nThe event starts with a small presentation that sets the mood for queer history and will help you to get started.\nThroughout the event\, queerhistory researchers will be on call and help with content issues and with finding and tagging sources. There are also Wikipedia experts who advise on Wikipedia’s technical questions.\nFriends of Queer History brings source literature to the event and lists open sources on the web. This makes it easy to mark sources in the texts you write. Sources help in evaluating texts and make them more valid.\nVegan snacks and drinks are available during the workshop – and of course good company!\n\nProgram\n16.00–16.30 Introduction to queer history (Tuula Juvonen and Sandra Hagman\, only in Finnish) \n16.30–16.45 Small introduction to Wikipedia practices (Kimberli Mäkäräinen\, Susanna Ånäs) \n16.45–18.45 Workshopping\, writing\, free discussion and refreshments – experts will be present throughout the event \n18.45–19.00 Summary\, feedback and conclusion \nRegistration\nThe registration is open until 23 November 2022 . The event is free of charge. \n\n\n \n\n(If the form above doesn’t work\, you can register via the same form on Google Forms.) \nAccessibility\nPresentations and speeches at the event are in Finnish. There is no sign language interpretation or written interpretation at the event. \nThe association’s Safer Space Guidelines are in use at the event. Please read them beforehand. \nOn-site participation:\nHAM’s ticket counter and entrance are located on the second floor of Tennis Palace (address Eteläinen Rautatiekatu 8\, Helsinki)\, which is accessible using lifts located in the vicinity of all the exits. On the Eteläinen rautatienkatu end there is an escalator leading directly to the museum ticket counter. The event space (“HAM-sali”) is located on the same floor as the ticket counter. \nHealth safety: Please don’t attend the event on-site if you feel like you have the flu or have flu symptoms. Take care of good hand hygiene. We recommend using a face mask\, and masks as well as hand sanitizer will be available at the event. We are monitoring the corona situation and will inform those who have registered about any changes\, and on this page as well. \nRead more about arrival to HAM (opens in new window). \nRead more about HAM’s accessibility here (opens in a new window). \nOnline participation:\nRemote participation is organized via Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent during the week of the event to those who have registered. Remote participants can follow the presentations at the beginning of the event (see program above). The coordinator of the event\, Kaura Raudaskoski\, will be on Zoom during the entire event\, passing on questions and comments to the experts on site. If you have accessibility needs or wishes\, we are happy to discuss them with you beforehand\, so please contact us! \nFurther info:\nKaura Raudaskoski \nSecretary and project coordinator \nFriends of Queer History association \nsihteeri@sateenkaarihistoria.fi \n+358 45 783 17571 (Tue-Fri)

SUMMARY:Queer Writing Evening
DESCRIPTION:When? Thursday 17.11. from 5 to 7 p.m \nWhere? Kvääristö\, Kolmas linja 17  Helsinki \nWhat? Gentle history writing as part of “Rainbow history month”. Invisibility of ordinary everyday life and the digital nature of modern times are and will be problems of historical research. Let’s make the job for the future historians a bit easier. \nAt the beginning of the evening\, Iiris and Minna from the The Labour Archives will talk about the project of saving queer histories and archiving. After that\, Selma guides a couple of creative writing exercises\, after which there will be free writing time. \nWhat is good enough for archives? Basically anything! You can write a short memoir about your life or your thoughts about queer everyday life in the 2020s. \nIf you want\, you can bring queer history materials with you\, such as photos\, notebooks\, letters\, event brochures\, etc. The material will be handed over The Labour Archives\, which will take care of them. During the evening\, you are also welcome to part without the pressure of archiving. \nAccessibility info will be published on this page later on! \nAny questions? Selma Hopsu\, tel. 0405236240\, selma.hopsu@gmail.com \nInformation about the project of saving queer histories (in Finnish): \nhttp://www.tyark.fi/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Työväen_Arkisto_Sateenkaaritiedeote_elokuu.pdf

SUMMARY:Nina Wakeford | We are here because we are queer\, we are queer because we are here.
DESCRIPTION:Nina Wakeford | We are here because we are queer\, we are queer because we are here.  \nPerformance\, screening and conversation. \nTuesday\, March 29\, 2022  \nFrom 18:00 -21:00 \nAt Museum of Impossible Forms \n  \nMuseum of Impossible Forms warmly welcomes you to an evening with artist Nina Wakeford. Nina is an artist based in London and is Visiting Professor at Kuvataideakatemia / Academy of Fine Arts in March 2022. Her work begins with the unfinished business of past social movements and the challenges of revisiting the energies that these movements created.  \nFor this evening we will start with a presentation of Nina’s work ‘an apprenticeship in queer I believe it was’ (moving image + live narration\, 10 mins\, 2019). Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp was active from 1981 to 2000 and was established by women to protest American cruise missiles being sited near Reading at RAF Greenham Common. The work explores the capacity of the peace camp to transform the identity of those who lived there. It includes thousands of images of forget-me-nots from the nearby memorial Peace Garden\, photographed one by one on 16mm film. The performance combines this footage with words from first-person accounts of women who were interviewed in a study of the peace camp\, alongside archival documents\, and a song. \nNina will then introduce an episode of a community-made satirical soap opera which was first broadcast on public access television in the United States in 1988-9. ‘Two in Twenty: a Lesbian Soap Opera’ is a low budget production created by a group of women in Boston and shows some of the cultural and political concerns of that time in the United States: including custody of children\, diversity and falling in love with your therapist.  \nWe warmly welcome those active in all forms of queer life\, politics and art to share this evening with us! \n  \nAbout the artist: \nNina Wakeford is an artist based in London and is Visiting Professor at Kuvataideakatemia / Academy of Fine Arts in March 2022. Her work begins with the unfinished business of past social movements and the challenges of revisiting the energies that these movements created. Drawing on a personal collection of feminist materials from the 1970s and 1980s\, Wakeford has made a series of film and performance works that involve singing as a way of attaching herself to objects or images. \nRecent work has been performed and shown at Glasgow International\, Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA)\, and the Barbican. Her two year commission for Art on the Underground included the artist book Our Pink Depot: The Gay Underground FLO-N202-236000000-TRK-MST-00002-SAY-HELLO-WAVE-GOODBYE-KEN-NIE-BPS (Book Works\, 2019). She teaches in the Department of Art\, Goldsmiths\, University of London.  \n  \n***\nMuseum of Impossible Forms is a cultural centre located in Kontula\, East Helsinki\, and the coming together of communities of art and cultural workers who believe in the need for building anticolonial\, antipatriarchal\, and non-fascist commitments and futures.\n\nMuseum of Impossible Forms is accessible by lift with thresholds up to 4cm on the way. The toilet has no thresholds but is not spacious enough to meet accessibility standards. The nearest accessible toilet is located at Kontula metro station.\n\nFor directions\, please refer to this map: https://museumofimpossibleforms.org/gettingthere
